Engagement rings –What happens if an engagement is broken off
This is an unhappy topic to raise, but consider the breaking off an engagement, obviously if the couple are not getting on well it is much less of a trauma to split before rather than after the wedding. What happens to engagement rings when engagements are broken? The most common expectation is that in cases where the man breaks off the engagement then the women would be entitled to keep the ring. It is considered a contingent gift that is to say contingent upon the wedding taking place so if Woman breaks the engagement she would be expected to return the ring. Circumstance may be altered if the ring was given as a gift at Christmas or a birthday then it might be considered an unconditional gift.

Engagement rings, Jewellers tell us are just about the most commonplace returned jewellery item. On the bright side, a contemporary ring with a good Diamond in a good setting holds its value well. Perhaps the best thing a couple can do is to have a written agreement about what happens to the ring and other possessions if an engagement should fail, but many would see this as an unnecessary precaution. Another solution I have heard suggested is to make a verbal agreement in the presence of some reliable friends. I am sorry to have had to raise this difficult topic but feel that it needs covering. Let us all hope that it never happens to our friends or us!
